Speakers
Five talks on disease maps, from curation to clinical application.
Marek Ostaszewski
Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB)
University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Talk: Bridging knowledge and computation of perturbed pathways with disease maps
Marek is a researcher at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine with a background in the fields of metaheuristics and network security he moved to the domain of systems biology. He explored analysis of topological properties of biological networks. Joined the Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg and entered the field of project management of clinical research. He worked as a scientific project manager on a number of translational medicine projects.
Marie Corradi
HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, Netherlands
Talk: Llemy, a user-driven development of an AI interface to explore disease maps
Marie is a food engineer (AgroParisTech, FR) and bioinformatician (Vrije Universiteit, NL) by training. She did her PhD at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences on the topic of small and large language models for information extraction from scientific text, with applications in the ONTOX (https://ontox-project.eu/) and VHP4Safety (https://vhp4safety.nl). During that time, she also developed an agentic prototype to interact with disease maps.
She currently works as a data scientist at dsm-firmenich.
Matti van Welzen
Department of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics
University of Rostock, Germany
Talk: Disease Maps as Infrastructures for Accessible Large-Scale Data Analysis
Matti van Welzen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Systems Biology and Bioinformatics at the University of Rostock, Germany. His research focuses on building large-scale biological networks to integrate heterogeneous biomedical data. He develops new approaches to analyze these networks, reduce complexity, identify patterns, and explore causal relationships to generate new hypotheses. A key focus of his work is making computational tools intuitive and accessible to researchers across disciplines.
Luiz Ladeira
Biomechanics Research Unit
University of Liège, Belgium
Talk: From knowledge maps to biological insights
Luiz is a postdoctoral researcher at the Biomechanics Research Unit, GIGA Institute – Molecular and Computational Biology, University of Liège, Belgium. He is a trained nutritionist and holds an MSc and PhD in Cell and Structural Biology from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), Brazil. His recent research, mostly in the ONTOX project (https://ontox-project.eu/), is focused on supporting NAMs development by setting the physiological grounds for Adverse Outcome Pathways building and refinement, computational modeling rationale, and ontology maps construction.
Martina Summer-Kutmon
Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (MaCSBio)
Maastricht University, Netherlands
Talk: A multi-layer disease map to study post-COVID mechanisms
Martina is an associate professor at Maastricht University. Her research group focuses on network biology as a framework for understanding complex disease mechanisms, integrating multi-omics data to model and visualize the molecular processes underlying human health and disease. She is currently leading the post-INFECT project studying post-COVID disease mechanisms across scales (phenotype, (neuro-)imaging, and molecular).
